<br /> This Grassland is for the Birds
<br /> In spring 2001,fauna baseline data collection began at McDowell
<br /> Prairie,and an ambitious grassland expansion project partially funded by•
<br /> the NC Plant Conservation Program and the USFWS Partners Program was
<br /> begun to enlarge the prairie restoration area to provide a larger,
<br /> unfragmented native grassland habitat for declining grassland bird
<br /> ' species. A 150-acre contiguous grassland and shrubland habitat has now
<br /> r `
<br /> evolved from the initial 15-acre prairie restoration site. Comparison of
<br /> lIIJJJJJJaJJJJJJ faunal data is now in progress and changes in avian species composition
<br /> and breeding status are already evident. Species targeted by DNR's
<br /> management of grassland habitat include grasshopper sparrow, savannah
<br /> sparrow,vesper sparrow,eastern meadowlark,northern bobwhite,
<br /> Loggerhead Shrike American woodcock,loggerhead shrike,northern harrier,wild turkey,and
