(This statement should be expanded for question#5 <br /> of Part 2 of the application.) <br /> The Dr. Arch Jordan House possesses architectural significance as one of the best preserved and <br /> most stylish examples of the Italianate style in rural Orange County. It retains a wealth of <br /> original ornamental woodwork and other features, including arched-topped windows with <br /> original wood sashes, Italianate-style cornice with a deep overhang supported by sawn brackets, <br /> and its original front porch, posts and railings. On the interior, the main front section of the house <br /> retains all of its ornate original mantels, along with a gracious stair that curves upward from the <br /> rear of the center passage. The rooms exhibit varying decorative patterns of beaded board wall <br /> sheathing or wainscoting. The house is sited in a pristine rural setting on a hill, overlooking its <br /> 47 acre parcel. It retains its early smokehouse and two barns. It is historically significant as the <br /> home of Dr. Archibald Currie Jordan(1852-1922), a prominent rural medical doctor and a leader <br /> in the establishment and operation of the Caldwell Institute, a regionally important school. <br /> Jordan was also a successful businessman who operated a nearby general store and pharmacy <br /> with his brother. <br /> Please see attached National Register nomination prepared by Dr. Keith Zahniser, dated Feb. <br /> 1, 1998. <br /> *Please submit current photographs of the property including all elevations of the main house and any <br /> other important buildings.
