This is a proposal for a historic resource survey of Orange County, North
Carolina. Since the Chapel Hill township has been surveyed, only the remaining six
townships (Bingham, Cheeks, Hillsborough, Eno, Cedar Grove, and Little River) will
be surveyed. The area to be surveyed is mainly rural and vernacular in character
with a few rural concentrations.
There will be three stages of the project. The first stage will be undertaken to
compile basic research on the area for support of the survey. The principal
investigator will use primary and secondary sources to establish a preliminary list of
structures with historic significance and establish historic contexts. The second stage
will be the field survey and recording of data. Assisted by any interns, the principal
investigator will travel through the unsurveyed areas of Orange County to provide a
comprehensive survey (see Time Line for details). Opportunities to supplement the
survey with oral history and other information will be incorporated as it becomes
available. A computerized system of recording information will be used to input
data. This system will then be used to generate facsimiles of the data forms, as
acceptable to the State Historic Preservation Office. The last stage will be public
presentations of the information and completing the written documentation.
Performance of Work
Principal Investigator: The survey, will be undertaken by David Bergstone, as
the sole principal investigator. A minimum of 35 hours a week over 46 weeks will be
spent by the principal investigator on the project, excluding travel time to and from
Orange County and major holidays. Interns provided by Orange County will have
their work supervised by the principal investigator. Depending on the experience
and background of the interns, they will assist with the mapping, completing survey
forms, and photographing the structures. The principal investigator will provide
photographic equipment and a vehicle.
All work by Mx. Bergstone and supervised interns, will be performed in
accordance with the N.C. State Historic Preservation Office's standards. Work
performed by the principal investigator will be paid according to the agreed upon
work unit schedule, up to a maximum of $27,500. The project will start on
September 1, 1992, and will be fully completed by July 31, 1993, Any work
performed after August 30, 1993, will not be reimbursed unless agreed to by all
parties.
At least one progress report will be presented to the Historic Preservation
Commission before January, 1993. Additional reports may be presented, as the
principal investigator or the Commission feel necessary. A final presentation will be
