Price, Jr., Director
As we discussed today on the telephone, here, briefly, are comments on the
people who have expressed interest in the Orange County Survey Project.
Scott Brown has survey experience primarily in industrial sites and communities,
mostly in northern states, and based on his interview and various materials,
Michael Southern and I agree that he does not have the knowledge of southern
vernacular architecture needed to conduct the Orange County survey with maximum
effectiveness.
Jennifer Martin has good background in southern vernacular architecture and would
be qualified to conduct the survey, but she was first choice for the Duplin County
project and has verbally accepted their offer.
Todd Peck and Jody Carter, whom you have not interviewed yet, have good background
in southern vernacular architecture, and would probably be strong candidates for
the project, though they would have to spend some time getting a little better
grounding in early and mid - nineteenth century architecture, particularly traditional
architecture. They have a solid knowledge of later nineteenth and early twentieth
century southern popular and vernacular architecture.
Dan Pezzoni and Rhonda Lafever as a team bring a solid knowledge of southern vernacular
architecture and survey methodology to the project.. Although Rhonda's experience
would not qualify her to begin and complete the survey absolutely on her own from
the beginning, her education at Mary Washington (and her excellent record there)
have convinced Michael and me that, working as a team with Dan Pezzoni, she has
the promise to move into a more independent role in the manner they propose. Dan
Pezzoni's proposal and involvement in the project make this team a strong one, for
as you know, Dan is a highly experienced, responsible, absolutely first -rate
surveyor. The approach they propose seems to us to be a very workable one, with
Dan working intensively with Rhonda at the outset, and at frequent intervals
throughout the project. I have checked Rhonda's references at Mary Washington and
find them excellent. Although we would all like for Dan to do all of the project,
109 EastJones Street • Raleigh, North Carolina 27601 -2807
