The County's land use planning program is extremely <br />advanced, and the findings of the survey will be actively <br />integrated into the planning process. The project is Phase II of a <br />multi- phased county -wide survey. Phase I.involved a survey of the <br />unincorporated portions of Chapel Hill Township, the most urbanized <br />and populous township, containing 70 percent of the county's <br />approximately 94,000 residents. <br />Project Description <br />The purpose of the Phase II project is to identify, record, and <br />evaluate historic properties in the remaining unincorporated <br />portions of the county. The survey area consists of six townships -- <br />Bingham, Cheeks, Hillsborough, Eno, Cedar Grove, and Little River. <br />Excluding municipalities, the total area encompasses approximately <br />305 square miles. It is estimated that approximately 600 -700 <br />buildings will be examined and recorded through inventory forms and <br />mapping. <br />Field surveys along identified 1891 transportation routes have <br />indicated that most structures are located in the unincorporated <br />community of Efland, in areas adjacent to the Town of Hillsborough, <br />and in rural crossroads clusters such as the Cedar Grove community. <br />The use of multiple listing forms by the consultant will expedite <br />the survey of these areas. <br />Project activities will include field surveys, research, <br />compilation of files, and interpretation necessary to produce the <br />inventory. All elements of the project must be completed in <br />accordance with standards set forth by the State Historic <br />Preservation Office, Division of Archives and history, N.C. <br />Department of Cultural Resources. Copies of all documentation and <br />photographs provided to the State Historic Preservation Office will <br />be provided to Orange County. <br />During the course of the project, the consultant will make at least <br />two public presentations with the assistance of the Project <br />Coordinator. One presentation will be to the Board of County <br />
