U <br />PROPOSAL FOR WASTE REDUCTION AND ENHANCEMENT OF COUNTY INTER <br />OFFICE "PAPER BACK" PROGRAM <br />Senate Bill 111 requires that counties reduce the amount of <br />waste that goes to the landfill by 25% by .Tune of 1993. In <br />order to accomplish this goal, all contributors to the solid <br />waste stream must adopt practices to reduce the amount that <br />goes to the landfill, including Orange County. Waste <br />reduction is best accomplished through waste reduction at the <br />source, reuse, recycling and composting. The following is <br />a plan to encourage Orange County employees and users of <br />County buildings to maximize our potential for reducing our <br />waste stream. Components of the plan include: <br />* Waste Audit <br />* Total Recovery of Recyclables from the Waste Stream <br />* Evaluation of Existing System and Ways of Enhancing <br />* Education <br />Waste Audit <br />The Public Works Department is currently conducting a waste <br />audit to determine: <br />1) The types and amount of recyclable items that are <br />going into our waste that we do not have inter office <br />bins for (plastic, glass, cardboard,, blueprint paper, <br />magazines, mixed paper), and <br />2) The amount of recyclable items that are going into <br />our waste that we do have inter office bins for. <br />Upon this determination, staff will be able to devise a plan <br />specific to our needs and make the most of our resources as <br />we try to rapture as much of our recyclable waste stream as <br />possible. <br />Total Recovery of Recyclables From the Waste Stream <br />In order to effectively enhance our "Paper Bark" program and <br />reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill, the <br />following information is needed: <br />1) Items that are recyclable - Currently, the following. <br />recyclable items are accepted in Orange County: . <br />aluminum, tin cans, newsprint, white paper, green bar <br />computer paper, blueprint paper, colored paper, green <br />glass, brown glass, clear glass, plastics 1,2,3 and <br />5, magazines and glossy catalogs, used motor oil, <br />cardboard and brown paper bags and plastic grocery <br />3 <br />
