1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No A <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: August 3, 1992 <br />SUBJECT: Orange County Solid Waste Committee Recommendations <br />DEPARTMENT Public Works PUBLIC HEARING YES NO X <br />----------- <br />....-,.----------------- <br />ATTACHMENT (S) <br />Compactor Collection Center <br />Description <br />Procedural Guide for Siting Solid <br />Waste Centers <br />Cost Estimates for One Site <br />Implementation <br />---------- - ..,.,. - - - - -- -- - -- - -- <br />------------------------------- <br />INFORMATION CONTACT <br />Wilbert McAdoo, ext 2627 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBER <br />Hillsborough 732 -8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968 -5501 <br />Mebane 227 -2031 <br />Durham 688 -7331 <br />PURPOSE: To present some initial recommendations from the Orange <br />County Solid Waste Committee with regard to enhancement of solid waste <br />collection in unincorporated Orange County. <br />BACKGROUND: In January 1992, the Board of Commissioners established <br />the Orange County Solid Waste Committee ( OCSWC) and assigned it the <br />following charge: <br />* To identify means for compliance with state mandates regarding solid <br />waste management in unincorporated Orange County. <br />* To identify solid waste collection service to be provided as <br />determined by citizen needs. <br />* To identify equitable financing for the chosen level of service. <br />* To identify means for garnering citizen support for and commitment to <br />a solid waste management plan. <br />The Committee has met four times since its initial meeting on March 31. <br />Four sub - committees (Collection Options; Education; Legislation; and <br />Waste Reduction) were established by the Committee at its April 13 <br />meeting. <br />The Collection options sub - committee has met on four occasions to <br />discuss alternatives for solid waste collection. They presented a <br />report and recommendations to the entire OCSWC at its July 22 meeting. <br />After discussion, the OCSWC voted to present to the Board of <br />Commissioners the following recommendations: <br />1) To develop the Ferguson Road Solid Waste Collection Center as <br />a staffed site, using the Compactor Collection Center model. <br />
