11
subsequently asked Mr. Hann to call a meeting to discuss rules of
procedure, now scheduled for June 24.
County Board of Commissioners
1. are th sizes of some of the Potential landfill sites so
a e?
See 17, under Carrboro list, above, page 6.
2. What is the desired, life expectancy of the next landfill?
We began the search with the goal of obtaining a site with 20 -30
years' life expectancy, and with the hope of extending that life
expectancy through waste management efforts. We think 30 years is
desirable because we believe that finding future landfills will be
even more difficult than the current search. We believe that the
process for lcsating future sites will take even longer than it
does now. We believe that land will be far more expensive in the
future. We believe that regulations will be even more stringent in
the future and will raise the cost of landfilling dramatically.
We hope that by combining a site of good size with aggressive
source reduction, recycling and post - recycling volume reduction, we
can make what ordinarily would be a 30 -year landfill last for 50 or
more years.
3. What are the en ine5-ring considerations that affect how much
land we will need for a landfill site?
See #5, under Carrboro list, above, page 5.
4. Recognizing that detailed enclin eerin estimates cannot be made
at this stage of the process, what is a reasonable range of acreage
that we can expect to have to ac uire for the next landfill?
See 15 and 16, under Carrboro list, above, pp. 5 -6.
Response by Joyce Engineering:
The reasonable range of acreage for the next landfill is 300
to 500 acres. This value does not vary from the original
intent of the LOG, the LSC and staff. Note that the
conceptual site utilization plans are consistent with this
range. Note also that site boundaries were drawn to keep
large single tracts intact. The entire site areas are not and
never were proposed for waste disposal; they include
allowances for buffers, unsuitable areas (wetlands, etc.),
ancillary facilities, soil borrow operations, and so forth.
Some sites could and likely will be reduced in size on the
basis of detailed site studies and land acquisition
considerations.
5. How do the en ineers determine exactly what land disturbing
activities must take Place in the site evaluation rocess?
