TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL
306 NORTH COLUMBIA STREET
CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA 27516
June 18, 1992
ki
Telephone (919) 968 -2700
Ms. Pam Jones, Director of Purchasing and Central Services
County of Orange
PO Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Ms. Jones:
Re: Request for approval of July Fourth fireworks display at Kenan
Stadium
We're writing to request approval of plans for the fireworks
display planned at Kenan Stadium on the Fourth.
Enclosed are copies of the current license and insurance
certificate provided by Southern International Fireworks Inc.,
which will again be the fireworks contractor.
The fireworks will again begin at 9:30 pm after brief ceremonies
and a performance by the Triangle Brass Band. The fireworks display
will be almost identical to the one last year. We plan to eliminate
the ground displays in Kenan Stadium and substitute some additional
shells of the types already identified in the program last year.
The fire protection and safety plan developed for this year is very
similar to last year's, with limited changes based on experience
last year. The launching area will again be in the Ramshead parking
lot, with the Ehringhaus practice field as the fallout area.
(Please see the attached map.)
One change is that based on experience last year, the perimeter of
the restricted access area that was set up along part of Stadium
Drive can be moved somewhat to the south as marked on the enclosed
drawing.
Second, in managing smoke generation, UNC staff believes it will
not be necessary based on experience last year to turn off outside
supply fans at Chase Hall.
Third, because Avery Hall will be occupied by participants in a
soccer camp, the access /exit from this building will be restricted
to the appropriate area of Ridge Road north of Stadium Drive.
We will again emphasize to citizens the importance of not bringing
sparklers or other fireworks items. Fire personnel in the stadium
will be watching for any problems and will have extinguishers on
