II. Project Description <br />Goal: To reduce risk behaviors for violence- related injury <br />among adolescents attending Phillips Middle School in <br />-the Chapel Hill /Carrboro system in Orange County. <br />Strategy: Conflict resolution will be introduced to the <br />curriculum. Every sixth grader at Phillips Middle School will <br />be exposed to concepts of healthy conflict resolution through <br />a series of workshops presented by the Youth Coordinator of <br />the Dispute Settlement Center. Pre - testing of attitudes about <br />conflict _will_ be adminis-tered__at._._this _- time- - - -. -- -.. - -- -- -- - - - -. -. -. -- <br />The students will then select from among their peers those <br />who will be trained as Peer Mediators. Those selected will <br />participate in a 16 -hour interactive training session in <br />mediation skills. Those successfully completing this training <br />will be designated as peer mediators and will be available as <br />neutral third parties when a dispute arises. <br />Methods: The Youth Coordinator will use the mediation <br />practices of the Dispute Settlement Center and the North <br />Carolina Mediation Network, as adapted for age <br />appropriateness. Use will be made of materials developed <br />through the National Association of Mediation in Education <br />(NAME), Educators for Social Responsibility, and the Anti - <br />Violence Curriculum developed by the Boston University School <br />of Public Health. The Youth Coordinator has also been trained <br />as a "prejudice reduction" trainer by the National Coalition <br />Building Institute. He will use these techniques to encourage <br />the appreciation of diversity as appropriate. Methods may <br />include: * role plays of conflict situations <br />* games involving use of "I" statements <br />* discussions of ways to express anger <br />* videotapes of mock mediations <br />Target Population: The sixth graders at Phillips Middle <br />School in the Chapel Hill /Carrboro system. <br />Number to be Reached: Approximately 245 students will be <br />directly affected. <br />
