ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 1, 1992
SUBJECT: Maternity Care Coordination Position
DEPARTMENT: HEALTH
ATTACHMENT(S):
None
1
Action Agenda
Item No.ZL2
PUBLIC BEARING: Yes X No
INFORMATION CONTACT:
HEALTH DIRECTOR'S OFFICE X2411
TELEPHONE NUMBER:
Hillsborough - 732 -8181
Chapel Hill - 968 -4501
Mebane - 227 -2031
Durham - 688 -7331
PURPOSE: To convert a temporary maternity care coordinator position to permanent
time - limited until June 30, 1993.
BACKGROUND:
1) on January 6, 1992, the Board of Commissioners authorized the health
department to apply for additional state funds to increase maternity care
coordination services. The department has received confirmation of a grant award
of $8,750. These funds would allow the department to employ a temporary
maternity care coordinator to provide services to additional medicaid recipients.
Medicaid revenue for the maternity care coordination services would be sufficient
to continue the position.
2) on March 24, 1992, the Board of Commissioners approved a budget ordinance
amendment to accept the grant award.
3) Recruitment of a professional social worker is proving difficult for
a temporary position without benefits. Therefore, the department requests that
the permanent, time- limited position be created by the commissioners to
facilitate filling this needed position.
4) The need for the position has been previously documented. The health
department's record in increasing medicaid revenues has been demonstrated,
however, the department will provide a report of the revenue generated by this
specific position with the 1993 -94 budget to assess whether the position should
be continued.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: The Manager recommends that the temporary maternity care
coordination position be converted to a permanent, time - limited position through
June 30, 1993. The continuation of this position for FY 93 -94 would be evaluated
based on the medicaid revenue generated by the position and the caseload demand
experience.
