SCRAP <br />5001 Whitehorse Road <br />Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br />May 30, 1992 <br />Commissioner Moses Carey, Chair <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br />Dear Commissioner Carey: <br />SCRAP requests that the Board of Commissioners adopt the enclosed resolu- <br />tion at its June 1 meeting as the Board's response to the Coordination and <br />Consultation Committee report, "General Aviation in Orange County and the <br />Horace Williams Airport: A Process for Charting their Future." <br />There is no reason for lengthy deliberation about an issue that was <br />resolved three years ago. If you do not act now, this unnecessary exercise <br />will drag on to no good purpose. <br />If the University wishes to use the land'now occupied by Horace Williams <br />Airport for other purposes, the only acceptable solution is to close the air- <br />port. The AHEC service can certainly be transferred to RDU. As for other <br />users, such as the Chapel Hill Flying Club, who are welcome to use already <br />existing nearby airports, it is inconceivable that the Board would choose to <br />ask the taxpayers of this county to subsidize the recreational and business <br />interests of at most a few hundred people. <br />We are counting on your good sense to abort this process now. <br />Sincerely, <br />Madeline G.
