(Down of RUIshorough
HILLSBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA
27278
Mr. Steve Zoufaly. Supervisor
Standards and Classification Group
Division of Environmental Management
P.O. Box 29535
Raleigh. NC 27626 -0535
Subject: Haw Creek Watershed Reclassification
Dear Mr. Zoufaly.
101 E. Orange Street
P.O. Box 429
(919) 732 -2104
January 21, 1992
The Town of Hillsborough was just recently made aware of the
request that was made of your office to reclassify the Haw Creek
Watershed so that it would no longer be protected as either a
primary or an emergency water supply.
As you may be aware. the Town of Hillsborough has been
operating under a capacity -use agreement for withdrawals from the
Eno River. The Town is currently unable to provide potable water
to its customers without having to buy water from adjacent water
systems. In the near future. the town will be looking to site a
reservoir to meet its current and future raw water supply needs.
To this end, we believe that both the Town and the State need to
consider all potential raw water supplies in light of an overall
watershed management program.
The Town of Hillsborough hereby respectfully requests the
continued protection of the Haw Creek Watershed and that it not
be reclassified at this time.
sincerely.
Tom Hartye, P.E.
Town Engineer
cc: Eric Swanson. Town Manager
Mayor Horace Johnson
Town Board of Commissioners
Michael Brough
TH /mc
12
