The community is moving in the
direction of developing more facilities for older persons
activities. RSVP is working with the Friends of the Chapel Hill
Senior Center to develop a new senior center in Chapel Hill. RSVP
will be housed in the new center.
RSVP was awarded a National Significance Grant of $7,500 for family
literacy in the areas of English as a Second Language and Read -A--
Story -To -A -Tot. lori ventura was hired as coordinator and is
meeting the goals and objectives established for this program.
Planning and development is on schedule. The RSVP projected number
of volunteers, hours, and stations increased due to the new program.
Volunteer Support
There is a low turn over rate for volunteers in the program. Those
exiting the program site reasons of ill health, moving away, and
employment discontinuing their volunteer service. The positive
response to the questionnaires reflect a belief in the program and
the benefits it offers. The Council felt that volunteers, both new
and those with the program for several years should be advised of
their rights and privileges. Volunteers not satisfied with their
assignments should be informed of the opportunity to change. This
is being done through communications such as the newsletters and
during volunteer registration by making sure the volunteers receive
information such as the RSVP Grievance Procedure.
The job description form encourages a greater understanding of the
job by the volunteer and the supervisor. Most volunteers learned of
the program through the media (especially newspapers) or word of
mouth. The advertisements many times will bring a new volunteer
into the program, not necessarily for a specific request, but to
enroll and find his or niche.
Communication, Planned and Informal
The RSVP newsletter, "Volunteer Viewpoint ", (8 pages) which is sent
bi- annually, is very informative and enjoyed by all. Birthday cards
are sent to each volunteer. Many times volunteers call or send
thank you notes for the remembrance. RSVP will publicize special
requests from agencies-in coordination with the agencies for the
expense of the mailing. The Advisory Council regularly meets bi-
monthly and sub - committees meet as needed. RSVP staff are Orange
16--B.
