ORANGE COUNTY RSVP ADVISORY COUNCIL
EVALUATION SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT
Nineteenth Year (1992 -1993)
The Volunteer Communit
Orange County is home to over 11,000 people over the age of 60
(about 12.4% of the total population). It continues to be a popular
retirement area with many retirees remaining active and contributing
to the community through volunteerism.
This year has seen changes in our staff. The director resigned due
to pregnancy; clerical staff was reduced because of health reasons.
There has been no assistant as the assistant director became the
full -time director. However, a search is now on for that position.
We were understaffed approximately six months. However, the program
continued to meet and exceed goals and objectives based on quarterly
reports.
The RSVP Evaluation Committee conducted formal program evaluations
in certain areas this year. Questionnaires were sent to active and
inactive volunteer agency stations, 79 in all, to make contact with
all agencies that may need RSVP help. The 18 active stations that
replied reported satisfying results. (See examples).
Questionnaires were also sent to inactive (exiting) volunteers most
of whom had been very active during their years with RSVP. A 57%
response rate was achieved. We found that there were three reasons
for persons leaving the RSVP program: (1) poor health, (2) moving
out of town, and (3) securing employment. None of the volunteers
left because of dissatisfaction with the program. These questions
also addressed their level of satisfaction as active volunteers for
which results were positive. (See example).
RSVP Programming
RSVP is responsive to community needs and publicizes through radio,
newspapers, newsletters, and TV. The new director is serving on the
Advisory Council of the new Orange County Volunteer Center (RSVP was
active in creating the Center). A relationship between the new
Center and RSVP has been established for cross referrals of volun-
teers over and under age 60. Previously, RSVP was the only referral
agency for volunteers in Orange County. Many people under 60 called
for volunteer opportunities and were referred. Far more requests
came in for volunteer assistance than could be addressed in a timely
manner. Perhaps together RSVP and the Volunteer Center can better
meet the needs of the non - profit agencies.
Over 60 volunteer stations are active, providing a variety of volun-
teer assignments. A station training program has been planned. The
sub - committees have provided excellent input for determining the
direction of the program. special projects this year which were
16-A.
