3'- 9 - i'2
STATEMENT FOR PUBLIC HEARING OF THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF
COMMISSIONERS, March 9, 1992, at the County Courthouse in Hillsborough,
regarding BUDGET OBJECTIVES AND GOALS
The League of Women Voters of Chapel Hill and Carrboro thanks you for the
opportunity to speak at this public hearing.
The League of Women Voters supports stringent controls to protect the
quality and quantity of water resources, including protection of watersheds
for surface supplies and of recharge areas for ground water.
1. We support the implementation of state mandated classifications and
standards for watersheds. In particular, we endorse the highest possible
classification of University Lake and Cane Creek watersheds. It is important
that the presently strong University Lake protection not be weakened by
future local actions.
2. We support regulation of wastewater discharges and limitation of
development densities. The creation of impervious surfaces such as
rooftops, parking lots and roads causes stormwater runoff that delivers
pollutants that can result in serious impact on water quality.
The League urges citizens to be a part of strong local action in helping
develop watershed protection ordinances for the health and quality of life
for everyone. The objective is maintence of quality and quantity of our
water supply.
Nancy S. Mueller
Chair, Natural Resources
LWV of CH /C
