Box 8181 <br />Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br />Dear Commissioners: <br />I can see no advantage for the people of Orange County in <br />the proposed creation of a non - service area in our county. <br />Quite the contrary I belive we should seek to obtain the best <br />coverage possible in all areas of the county. <br />We should do nothing to assist in expanding monopolies in the <br />Cable TV industry. If we are to achieve county -wide service <br />in the near future it will most likely be by the "wireless" <br />systems currently coming•on line. One of the elements <br />holding up the "wireless" industry is the monopolistic <br />practices of the current Cable TV industry. (These practices <br />are reported in the early February issue of US News and World <br />Report.) Mr. Robert Thompson, Senior VP, at TCI defends <br />these practices as a means.of building new program networks <br />and makes no concession that would in any way increase the <br />competition and thus reduce the cost to the consumer or <br />provide service to the thousands yet to enjoy wide program <br />selection. <br />Congress and the FCC are currently seeking an answer to the <br />practices that 'freeze out' the "wireless" systems. <br />I strongly urge that no action be taken that would limit the <br />requirement for county -wide coverage or abet those who would <br />discourage competition. <br />There is the urge to approve the requested buffer zone with a <br />tongue in cheek hope that congress or the FCC will solve the <br />problem of "copyright ". This copyright issue is unlikely to <br />become finalized in the next three years, thus we will most <br />likely be faced with a continuation of the buffer zone if <br />
