General Statutes PHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Mebane 227 -2031 <br />Durham 688 -7331 <br />Chapel Hill 967 -9251 <br />PURPOSE: To receive citizen comment on a proposed Voluntary <br />Farmland Preservation Program Ordinance. <br />BACKGROUND: Since its re- activation and re- formation in 1990, <br />the Agricultural Districts Advisory Board has been <br />working on several important projects, including an <br />ordinance to formalize its existence and establish <br />procedures for establishing voluntary agricultural <br />districts. The proposed Voluntary Farmland <br />Preservation Program Ordinance is based on enabling <br />legislation contained in Article 61 of the N.C. <br />General Statutes. <br />The proposed ordinance would formally establish an <br />Agricultural Districts Advisory Board comprised <br />initially of seven (7) members which would have the <br />following powers and duties: <br />- Review and comment on applications for qualifying <br />farmland certification and designation of <br />voluntary agricultural districts; <br />- Hold joint public hearings with the Board of <br />Commissioners on public projects likely to have an <br />impact on agricultural operations within Orange <br />County; and <br />- Study additional methods of farmland preservation <br />and,make recommendations to the Board of <br />Commissioners. <br />
