7 <br />GRANT PRE-APPLICATION Page 4 <br />PROJECT OPERATION <br />Begin below, add one continuation page if necessary. <br />Approach <br />Targeted clients for these projects are 1) primary and secondary victims of child sexual <br />abuse in the UNC Hospitals Friday morning Child Medical Evaluation Clinic, 2) <br />adolescent victims of child sexual abuse, and 3) local mental health clinicians. Parents <br />and children in the Child Medical Evaluation Clinic will benefit from the project by <br />having support during waiting times in the Clinics in addition to support during the <br />evaluation per se. Support here is defined as information about the Clinic and the <br />exam, emotional support, and referrals for other necessary human services. <br />Adolescents in the support groups will benefit through the reduction of social isolation <br />as victims and the emotional support provided by the group experience. Local <br />therapists will benefit by being better - equipped to work effectively with victims of <br />sexual violence both in terms of providing crisis intervention services as well as <br />longer -term reintegration /reorganization therapy. Such benefits for all the above <br />c'ient groups should result in a better recovery prognosis for.sexual violence victims <br />in Orange County. <br />Child Medical Evaluation Clinic clients will be made aware of Clinic volunteers by Clinic <br />staff on -site as they arrive for their Clinic appointments. As an adjunct part. of the <br />service delivery team at the Clinic, Clinic volunteers will need no prior introductions. <br />They will introduce themselves to families. <br />Adolescent victims of child sexual abuse will be made aware of the support groups in a <br />variety of ways: radio /TV /print media publicity, word of mouth, contacts with public <br />and private school teachers, principals, social workers, nurses, and guidance <br />counselors. In addition, groups will be advertised through the local mental health <br />center, health department. department of social services and mailings to local <br />therapists. Lastly, public: ;7 will be distributed through local church /civic /social <br />groups, flyers, paid advertisements, and contacts in other youth - serving agencies in <br />Orange County. <br />Local therapists will be made aware of the training programs through direct mailings <br />to all therapists on the Center's referral listings, as well as through mailings to the <br />local mental health department and the psychiatry, social work, nursing, public <br />health, and medical schools at UNC - Chapel Hill. <br />This project will build on the Center's existing direct services and training programs. <br />The Center's Director will serve as the Project Director, overseeing all aspects of the <br />three projects. A full -time Special Projects coordinator will recruit, train, and <br />supervise Clinic volunteers and support group facilitators as well as plan and <br />implement the trainings for mental health providers. <br />During the second project year the same projects will be repeated: weekly coverage of <br />the Child Medical Evaluation Clinic, offering of 2 support groups for adolescent child <br />sexual abuse victims, and providing three trainings for local mental health providers. <br />To assist you in completing this section please refer to the instructions <br />
