According to the Institute of Government, the
County may choose to voluntarily extend Vacation and
Sick Leave benefits to elected officials.
Attached is a draft revision to the Vacation Leave and
Sick Leave sections of the Personnel Ordinance. This
provides that the Sheriff and the Register of Deeds
may voluntarily elect to be covered by these policies.
Such an election would be made upon adoption of this
policy revision or upon election to a term of office
and be in effect for the term of office.
For Sick Leave to be creditable for retirement
purposes, it is necessary for such leave to be accrued
on a monthly basis and for leave without pay to be
used if available leave has been exhausted, according
to the N. C. Local Government Employees' Retirement
System. Thus, the attached draft revision provides
for authorization by the Sheriff and Register of Deeds
for reduction in salary through leave without pay if
he or she elects to participate in the leave program
and available leave is exhausted.
1
