VI. Background and Demographics , Is <br />The age of the respondents ranged from 18 to 90 with a mean of 44.1 years. <br />Approximately one - quarter of the respondents are parents of students currently in one <br />of the school systems while another fourth are parents of former students. <br />There was an even split of male and female respondents. Relative to race, 88 % of <br />the respondents are white, nine percent black, and three percent "other" or refused. <br />Eighty -seven percent claim to have voted in the last election. The Orange County <br />district residents stand out, with 95.0% participation in the last election. In both the <br />Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Orange County districts, 93 % claim they would vote if the <br />school bond referendum takes place. <br />A third of the respondents, 33.7%, consider themselves "active in school- related <br />issues," with parents of current students being the highest segment (68.0%). <br />Fifty -seven percent report membership in "school- related organizations or citizen's <br />action committees." Of this group, 54.5 % are members of PTA and 5.2 % are <br />members in NEA. <br />C.i <br />• <br />n <br />�J <br />
