alj'or '? -J - fa
February 3, 1992
My name is Caroline Becker Long, of 4730 Timberly Drive, Block Captain
of Timbercrest Community Watch. Timbercrest includes Timberly drive and
Moriah Hill Road, a community of 19 homes. We are interested in preventing
episodes of Breaking and Entering.
In the late morning of Wednesday, January 22, 1992, two door -to -door
salesmen came to five homes in Timbercrest taking orders for household
cleaning products, walking through the woods between homes. I saw an old
model blue sedan pick them up in front of my next -door neighbor's mail box;
as the car went towards Erwin Road I noted the license number which I
reported to Deputy Archie Daniel.
In consultation with two residents of Timbercrest I called an
ad hoc meeting of the Timbercrest Community Watch for Friday evening at
5:30 PM and invited Deputy Daniel to attend. By the time our telephone
tree alerted the neighbors of the meeting I learned that a person walking
on Mimosa Drive had found new tools in the grass - an axe, a crowbar and
a hammer.
At the meeting twelve neighbors representing eight households in
Timbercrest reviewed the events. Deputy Daniel reminded us that door -to -door
salesmen are often a ruse to canvas a neighborhood. We decided by unanimous
vote to bring our concerns to the next meeting of the Orange County Commissioners.
A resident of Moriah Hill Road prepared the petition.
The petition reads: WHEREAS the incidence of crime in North Carolina
exceeds theover -all crime incidence in the United States; WHEREAS more than
500 burglaries were reported in Orange County in 1991, most within one mile
of a major highway; WHEREAS door -to -door solicitation is often used as a
means of targeting neighborhoods for potential break -ins; We, the members
of the Timbercrest Community Watch, petition the Orange County Commissioners
to enact an ordinance prohibiting door -to -door solicitation in Orange County
neighborhoods.
The petition is signed by 7g residents of Orange County, represent-
ing L households. We submit it to you for your consideration.
Re 7ctf4ly,
10-Al
Caroline B. Long
Block Captain, Timbercrest Community Watch
