Division of Archives and History <br />109 East Jones Street <br />Raleigh, NC 27601 -2807 <br />(919) 733 -4763 <br />Funding Available for Historic Preservation <br />Applications are now being accepted for funding under the North <br />Carolina 1991 historic preservation grant program, according to <br />State Historic Preservation Officer, William S. Price, Jr. <br />This grant program, administered, by the Historic Preservation <br />Office (HPO), Division of Archives and History, is funded with <br />North Carolina's share of the federal Historic Preservation <br />Fund, money Congress appropriates for preservation efforts. <br />.Eligible projects include architectural and archaeological <br />surveys, preparations of nominations to the National Register <br />of Historic Places, the Certified Local Government program, and <br />public information and education programs regarding <br />preservation activities. Eligible grant applicants include <br />local governments, universities, and private non - profit <br />organizations. <br />An estimated $120,000 is available for these grants, at least <br />$68,000 of which is set aside for local governments which have <br />been approved to participate in the Certified Local Government <br />Program. A competitive selection process is used to determine <br />all recipients. Grant funds are awarded on a matching basis <br />with awards generally in the $5- 10.000 range. The State <br />Historic Preservation Officer makes the final decision on <br />funding, selecting those projects which best meet the <br />established priorities stated in the grant application packets. <br />Grant funds must be administered in accordance with federal and <br />state requirements. All projects must be completed by <br />July 31, 1993. <br />The deadline for submittal of applications is January 31, 1992. <br />Announcement of grant awards is expected in early May. <br />Application packets, which include more detailed information <br />regarding this program, are available from the State Historic <br />Preservation Office, N.C. Division of Archives and History, <br />109 East Jones Street, Raleigh, NC 27601 -2807. <br />
