MCAdooAPPLICATION FOR ORANGE COUNTY SOLID WASTE COMMITTEE <br />DIRECTOR <br />Rocent state legislation is requiring that all local <br />governments develop a solid waste management plan. The plan <br />is to be designed to serve individual solid waste collection <br />and disposal needs while incorporating measures .f.or the <br />vublic good through waste reduction, reciycl ing, I. -,c,mljost.ing <br />and restriction on disposal of certain items in the sanitary <br />landfill. <br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners and County staff <br />have been investigating ways to improve the current g.reenbox <br />collection system. Although improvements have been made over <br />the last ten years, the sites continue to suffer from <br />vandalism and abuse, and County staff has little control over <br />1-Irohibited items dumped at the sites. Additionally, illegal. <br />commercial and residential private haulers and citizens from <br />oFher counties are using the sites at taxpayers' expense. <br />State mandates and problems with the existing collection <br />system present- many challenges for elected officials and <br />staff. Citizen involvement is needed to develop <br />a solid waste management plan that effect -ively addresses <br />these challenges. The Orange County Board of commissioners <br />is inviting interested citizens to submit an application to <br />serve on the Orange County Solid Waste Committee. <br />The role of tale Solid Waste Committee- will be to work with <br />staff to research, discuss, identify and .recommend a plan for <br />solid waste collection in unincorporated Orange County. The <br />Committee will also assist in promoting public education and <br />information to maximize citizen support and participation. <br />Committee members will attend one night meeting per month <br />for a twelve month period. There will be limited outside <br />reading and research requirements. The ideal committee <br />will consist of eleven members - one from each township <br />and one from The Orange County Planning Board, The Orange <br />County Health Board, The Orange County Economic <br />De,,elopment Commission and the Chapel Hill Waste <br />Reduction Task Force.
