4. <br />contribution their organization can make to this vision. <br />Participants were asked to select an area of interest to focus on <br />during the forum: education, health, income, basic needs or <br />community support. Group facilitators were assigned and oriented <br />to the task, and School of Social Work students functioned as <br />recorders for each group. <br />At on -site registration, participants received a packet <br />containing the participant list and descriptions of the purpose of <br />the Orange County Human Services Advisory Commission and the Task <br />Force for the Future of Human Services. <br />The forum began with announcements by the forum chair, Beverly <br />Foster, and a welcome by Moses Carey, Chair, Orange County <br />Commissioners. An introduction to the process of visioning was <br />provided by Philip Cook, a member of the Human Services Advisory <br />Commission, and a professor in the UNC -CH School of Social Work. <br />The remainder of the forum was spent in groups developing consensus <br />group statements in response to the following questions: <br />What is your vision for human services in Orange County? <br />What needs to take place to achieve these visions? <br />What do we need to stop doing now to achieve these visions? <br />The forum concluded with presentation of visions and <br />strategies from each group to the forum as a whole. Participant <br />evaluation of the forum included an assessment of the effectiveness <br />of the forum design and their satisfaction level with the vision <br />statements produced by their groups. A total of forty participants <br />completed the evaluation form for a response rate of 43.5%. Using <br />• five point scale of strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (5), <br />• weighted score of 3.925 indicated a high satisfaction with the <br />vision produced by their group. A weighted score of 4.250 (out of <br />a possible 5.0) indicated the extent to which they felt the forum <br />was effective in assisting them to develop the vision. <br />Following the forum, vision statements for each group were <br />consolidated into a single statement reflecting a common vision for <br />the delivery of human services in Orange County. Similarly, the <br />list of strategies to achieve this vision were organized into a <br />single list of actions. These were sent to all participants for <br />input and prioritization. In addition, participants were again <br />asked to rate the degree to which they felt the consolidated vision <br />statement could serve to guide human services planning in orange <br />County. A total of 43 participants responded to our request to <br />evaluate the consolidated vision statement for a response rate of <br />46.7 %.
