GLOSSARY OF COMPUTER TERMS <br />xo <br />The following terms are frequently used in our conversation and writing: <br />BBS or Bulletin -Board System <br />A computer used to store information and messages which are accessed by other computers via <br />telephone connections. A single computer may be used for more than one BBS, and also for other <br />tasks at the same time. <br />Central Processing Unit or CPU <br />The heart of the computer which does the actual computing. Computers are often described by the <br />type - number of the CPU microchip, such as 80486. The other main elements in the computer are the <br />RAM, ROM, and I /O. <br />Data <br />Any information stored on a computer. This may include text or numbers. <br />Data Banks <br />A slang term for the magnetic or optical computer.memory devices which are used to store data in <br />a somewhat permanent form. The electronic equivalent of a filing cabinet. <br />Data File <br />An individual collection of data which is kept together and given a label to permit identification and <br />retrieval. The electronic equivalent of a single document. <br />Data Directory or Folder <br />A group of files, generally concerning related subjects. The electronic equivalent of a file folder. <br />Electronic Mail or E -mail <br />A system for transmitting messages from one person to another using computers, modems and <br />telephone lines. Similar to telegrams. On computer networks, users are given cryptic addresses so <br />they can be reached from anywhere in the world. <br />Gateway <br />A computer program which permits. the relaying of data from another computer <br />Hard Disk <br />A large- capacity computer memory consisting of several rotating magnetic disks in a sealed, perma- <br />nent case. A hard disk may be erased, but is usually used for medium or long -term storage of data <br />and software programs. Magnetic tapemay also be used for larger data files. <br />I/O or Input /Output <br />The electronic circuits which connect the CPU with the keyboard, disks, screen and modem. <br />fil <br />
