5 <br />ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1990/91 <br />$46,379 (RELEAS$D) ZCONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FUNDS FROM <br />THE NORTS CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY <br />]►. Goal: Heighten awareness of Regional entity, Triangle <br />J's leadership. <br />Accomplishments: <br />1. Strategic Plan - Several meetings were held in this <br />regard and work is in progress on identifying economic <br />indicators.. <br />2. Improve Regional Cooperation - Directly and indirectly <br />responsible for the creation of several groups <br />espousing regional approaches to various tasks. <br />Participated, monitored, etc. <br />3. Upgrade Economic Strategies Committee - Set and present <br />informative sessions that result in decisive actions to <br />improve Regional economy. <br />4. Organized and began infrastructure survey. <br />8. Goal: Tie Region together by toll -free telephone <br />service.. <br />Accomplishments: <br />1. Arranged negotiating sessions among county managers and <br />LECs, provided info to Board & legislators. Submitted <br />critique of the various experimental plans to NCUC. <br />2. Evaluated NCUC ruling and published results of the <br />five -year effort to obtain toll -free telephone service <br />in the Triangle: We now have an order for a 50% toll <br />reduction for many metro residents. <br />C. Goal: Assist local officials and organizations in <br />improving the Region's economy. <br />Accomplishments: <br />1. DQE program upgrade efforts have met with good <br />attendance and responses. Scheduled session in Selma <br />for Spring quarter. Deferred the Summer meeting in <br />Garner (per their request) until October 3rd. <br />2. METRO MAP - prepared final corrections & negotiated <br />copyright issue with Champion. Began distribution and <br />publicity in June. <br />3. Served as staff to the I -40 Economic Impact Study Group <br />& produced the draft recommendations. <br />D. Goal: Enhance international image of Region. <br />Accomplishments: <br />1. The Research Triangle World Trade Center is progressing <br />well and has moved to larger facilities at the Meridian <br />Center off I40 at NC 55. <br />2. FTZ #93 operator terminated contract, all management <br />and promotion work being done by COG, two subzone <br />applications in process. <br />3. New operator for the general purpose zone being <br />"recruited ". Responding to numerous inquiries. <br />
