lG
REEVES: It needs to get to °Cobb Terrace and policy -wise there can be a difference as to
what's of there no but there should not be any inconsistency as to what's coming.
That is, the way,*kAe Post Office feels .may. They do not have to ask all the
time, they can just give you a new address. I believe that that at least should be the
plan, time wise and pressure wise you would like to carry it out. You should certainly
have strong support from the municipalities, from this one particularly about the value
of that plan. They have done some things voluntarily with neighborhoods all the way
from highlighting your addresses so that the ambulance can see you house number to other
things. But",'.'that "'people "are -going to bristle about it there is no doubt. The way in
which it can be done so that it is done both so that the citizen understands and the
technical system can help them, for instance, as they change their addresses for
magazine and mail and other things. That is an easy service to provide them, that ties
the old with the new. If that is necessary for whatever convenience the old number had.
Now, how that's carried out in old areas, as I said, can be a time factor, but when it
becomes necessary how you do it should be a consistent policy.
MARSHALL: It seems to me that the old areas converting help in understanding the new
areas. In other words, if you have those numbers thlere, and there are some new
subdivisions that are built to the east say of Highway Road and you see those numbers
that from what you know on those numbers you are going to be able to go just as an
ordinary citizen to some of the newer places as we are getting used to it.
REEVES: That is very true and it is going to become obvious to citizens the difference
between the new and the old and its not just the age. I don't think you are going to
fund me, John, to go out to even East Franklin Street and try.and track-down what these
- people's actual addresses are and put it in my system. There is no one I can allocate
from my staff to do that kind of thing and not even the city directory people get it
right. If you look at one of the directories, I chuckle every once in a while, they
haven't solved the riddle either. Most citizens don't see the city directory so that
don't see that the address is not the way it is on their house.
HALKIOTIS: I would just like to say one thing. This whole issue has initiated a very
interesting discussion because it is not as easy as it was presented to us in the
beginning. I really appreciate your comments. I am still up in the air and I really
think-.that we -need to address this at another point in time. I think we need to have
-some "input from people from Chapel - Hill; - Carrboro, Hillsborough. The US Post Office as
you just said can step in at any time and tell you what your number is going to be.
:.They -. obviously have to be brought into this thing. Is there a proposal to take care of
Chapel Hill?
MARSHALL:-.._I don't know if there is on this-. I know
be changing the numbers. We have already agreed with
- If .we- are... going- _to. change .it,,,we better address.this.
have heard that they are going to
the Post Office on this system.
HALKIOTIS: That is what I am shooting for because there seems to be a lot of unanswered
.- questions still.
ff
C. ` th vst Office was just' to ste p in
atd change it, they would just
"create another route. They wouldn't change it to 4 digit numbers, would they.?
REEVES: Well, if it became their policy to do so, they would.
''HARTWELL: The..Chapel Hill man, remember he.is.back there in that corner, he said that
