AGENCY: Orange County Health Dept., "In The Know" <br />TARGET GROUP: Natural Helpers 13 -30 and minority youth between the ages <br />of 13 -19 years old <br />STRATEGY: Dissemination of HIV /AIDS information by teen and adult, <br />Natural Helpers (community persons to whom others naturally turn for <br />advice, information, informal counseling and peer education). <br />TARGET AREA: Orange County <br />BUDGET REQUESTED: $32,676.00 <br />STRENGTHS: <br />- Natural Helpers project has a proven track record in the community and <br />so does the local health department. <br />- Peer education (utilizing the Teen Natural Helpers) is a proven <br />strategy. <br />- Adult Natural Helpers are used as a resource for teens in the community. <br />- The involvement with a consortium of other agencies that target <br />adolescents <br />WEAKNESSES: <br />- Even though the program reaches large numbers of adolescents, it does <br />not have an aggressive outreach strategy to reach significant numbers of <br />teens at highest risk. <br />- There was no integration of sexually transmitted disease information in <br />the projects goals and objectives. <br />RECOMMENDATIONS: <br />- Approved for funding. <br />CONDITIONS OF FUNDING:. <br />- Strengthen adult Natural Helpers. <br />- Recruit some teen Natural Helpers that are out of the mainstream. <br />6 ; <br />
