may 1 9, 1 991
Dear Orange County Commissioners,
I learned the meaning of the word fear when my husband
began to physically and psychologically abuse and threaten
me over ten years ago..Although many incidents were followed
by promises that he wouldn't lose his temper again and despite
my hopes that these second chances would end my:-fears and that
he really could change, this did not happen.
Getting a restraining order was a move that I felt was the
only way to get protection for me and to protect my children
from the psychological effects of his abuse towards me. I was
very intimidated,,iabout filing for the Domestic Violence Protective
Order and having to face a Judge and courtroom full.of people
while I defended my need for protection, I was also afraid of
retaliation from my husband because of my actions. The Domestic
Violence Coordinator really helped to support me through this
process and helped to inform me as to how the law worked in this
situation. She really helped to give me the courage to seek
out the protection I needed and to follow up when the restraining
order was violated. I can't emphasize strongly enough the need to
help women in these difficult, stressful, and frightening situations.
Please do all you can to support the Orange County Domestic
Violence Coordinator so she can support us.
Thank you.
