DISPUTE SETTLEMENT CENTER
302 Weaver Street Carrboro, N.C. 27510 p
919 929 -8800
Hillsborough Mediation Site:
118 S. Churton Street
Hillsborough, N.C. 27278
732 -2359
May 9.1991
TO : Orange County Board of Commissioners
FROM: Betsy Fenhagen, Case Coordinato.r,Dispute Settle-
ment Center.
R::, Jan Stone, Domestic Violence Coordinator
For some years those of us who work in the
Orange County District Courts have lobbied for a
domestic violence counselor /coordinator. Last year
this became a reality with the appointment of Jan Stone
to this position within the Sherriff's office.
Having Ms. Stone in the courtroom has made a
tremendous difference, both to the women who bring
charges of assault and to everyone else concerned
with these cases in the courts. Before she came,it
was difficult for the court to give needed attention
to battered women. Prior to Jan, no one had time to
talk with these women at length, to contact them even
before court or advise them of the alternatives they
face in the courtroom.
Ms. Stone is well- organized and she is extremely
effective in serving the needs of these women and in
advising the court of their situations. Because of
her thorough research, we are all better informed and
the court is able to act in a more thoughtful manner.
Her position is an essential aid to an embattled
system.
D .4.
