Orange/Dui
P.O. Box 51848
May 8, 1991
Coalition for Battered Women, Inc.
Durham, NC 27717
Mr. Moses Carey, Jr.
Orange County Commissioners
P.O. Box 8181
Hillsborough, N.C. 27278
Dear Mr. Carey:
(919) 489 -1955
Y am writing on behalf of the Orange /Durham Coalition for Battered Women to
express our support for the position of Domestic Violence Coordinator and
the services that Jan Stone has provided in that position.
In the past year we have benefitted greatly from having Jan working with us
in Orange County. By working successfully with law enforcement and the
court system, Jan has better enabled the community to provide a coordinated
response to domestic violence in Orange County. Jan regularly refers women
to the Coalition for shelter, support group counseling and general advocacy
services. She also consults with the director of our batterer's program
about men who she feels are appropriate for our program.
We coordinate with Jan by directing our court advocates, when available,
to assist her in court. Our Director of Advocacy also goes to court in
Hillsborough each week to help Jan with court work.
The services that Jan provides complement and support our work, but does not
duplicate Coalition services. Having a Domestic Violence Coordinator work-
ing with the police and the courts has made it significantly easier for
battered women to use the legal system in Orange County.
It is clear, however, that Jan is over worked. The position was originally
designed to be filled by more that one staff person. The work load includes
significantly more duties than were anticipated. Given the current economic
climate, it is difficult to consider an additional expenditure; but the
Possible addition of a part -time person to assist Jan warrants some
consideration. It would also be helpful if the Domestic Violence Advisory
Board took a more active role in working with domestic violence in Orange
County by doing such things as meeting with law enforcement to see how the
pro- arrest policies are working and what we as a committee could do to
if changes are needed.
IQA United Way Agency
