Box 866 <br />Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br />` "- 732 -6194 <br />June 19, 1991 <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />c/o Ms. Tara Pikes <br />Orange County Housing and Community Development Department <br />300 Tryon Street <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />Dear Honorable Board Members, <br />On behalf of Orange Congregations in Mission, I strongly <br />endorse Orange - County's proposal for Community Development <br />Block Grant funds to finance Whitted Forest, a 35 unit <br />affordable housing development in.Hillsborough. <br />I regret that neither I nor other members of the OCIM <br />Board of Directors could be present tonight at this public <br />hearing because we must attend our own regularly scheduled <br />OCIM Board meeting tonight in Hillsborough. Please accept <br />this letter as my comments to the public hearing. <br />Orange Congregations in Mission is the local sponsor of <br />Whitted Forest. This development was designed in response to <br />the strong need we witness daily for affordable rental units, <br />especially for three bedroom apartments for our larger <br />families. OCIM has worked in close cooperation with a number <br />of local public and private agencies to ensure that Whitted <br />Forest will be a high quality development. In addition to <br />safe, energy- efficient apartments, the development will also <br />include a 1,200 square foot community room where OCIM and <br />other local agengies will provide a broad range of support <br />services. In thig way, Whitted Forest will provide <br />"bootstrapping" assistance as well as affordable shelter to' <br />its residents. <br />We, at OCIM,.believe Whitted Forest will serve the <br />residents of northern Orange County very well and will be a <br />model affordable housing development combining shelter with <br />support services. <br />On behalf of OCIM, I urge the Commissioners to proceed <br />with the application for Community Development Block Grant <br />funds.
