ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. I/ <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 25, 1991 <br />SUBJECT: COMMITTEE ON FEASIBILITY AND TIMING FOR PLANNING A NEW HIGH <br />SCHOOL <br />DEPARTMENT: COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO: X <br />ATTACHMENT(S): NO INFORMATION CONTACT: MOSES CAREY,JR. <br />TELEPHONE NUMBER - <br />Hillsborough - 732 -8181 <br />Chapel Hill - 968 -5401 <br />Durham - 688 -7331 <br />Mebane - 227 -2031 <br />------------------------------------------------- <br />PURPOSE: To establish a joint group of elected officials from each school <br />Board and the County Commissioners to study and make recommendations on <br />the need for and feasibility of the development of a new high school for <br />joint use by both school systems. <br />BACKGROUND: It is apparent that the number of students in Orange County is <br />growing more rapidly than expected. Both school systems in' Orange County <br />have included a new high school in their long range capital plans. The <br />growth patterns in both school systems may indicate the need to share a <br />new high school. The sharing of a new high school has potential for <br />considerable cost savings for Orange County taxpayers in the future if the <br />need for a second high school can be delayed. <br />A School Capital Bond Committee will <br />financing school capital needs within <br />on the need and timing for a new high <br />priorities. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): <br />be meeting to determine the means for <br />the next few months., Firm direction <br />school will aid them in establishing <br />1. That the Commissioners appoint a group of six elected officials <br />including 2 members from each school board to study and recommend to each <br />board the following: <br />a. whether a new high school should be developed for joint use by <br />both school systems. <br />b. when will a new high school be needed in Orange County if <br />jointly used by both systems <br />2. That the committee be asked to complete its work and recommendations <br />by September 15, 1991 so that the bond committee may use its findings in <br />priority setting. <br />3. That the committee recommend a process for planning a new high school <br />for joint use if that goal is established by the elected boards. <br />
