22 <br />the involvement of the male in family support programs and job training <br />programs as entirely appropriate. On -going education for professionals <br />involved with the young males will be critical. Because this emphasis on <br />males is a relatively new approach, the need for current information and <br />updates on the OFF Program will be essential to success. <br />The young father needs to be encouraged by all service providers to take a <br />substantial role in the nurturing and support of their children and this needs <br />to be done in a positive and supportive way, rather than in a punitive <br />fashion. <br />Training opportunities will be developed for all individuals involved in the <br />OFF program: peer educators, mentors and professionals. The Center for Early <br />Adolescence will provide training session on working with adolescents for <br />the mentors and professionals. County experts in peer programs will work <br />with the peer volunteers. <br />Cultural diversity will be the focus of several training sessions. Through the <br />planning process, we have identified a need to provide youth- serving <br />professionals with the skills to work effectively with the diversity of males <br />who will be a part of the program. <br />In the process of changing the attitudes of providers toward adolescent males, <br />we hope to change the view that male adolescents hold of themselves and <br />that they will come to expect that they will have an economically productive <br />future which will provide them with the financial basis for supporting a <br />family. <br />B.
