employer will be reimbursed for part of the participant's wages. At the end of
OJT, the participant will be retained as a regular employee.
Through an apprenticeship program, participants will gain actual work
experience and individualized attention. Professional mentoring is at the
core of a successful apprenticeship. Business leaders have been receptive
initially to the idea of training future employees through apprenticeships.
The OFF program has the support of both Chambers of Commerce in the
County.
Involvement of families in supporting goals
The individual plan will be developed jointly by the case advocate, the young
male and his family. The family's understanding of and support of these
goals will be critical to the young male's success. The OFF program will
operate on flexible hours in order to meet the needs of the families served.
The case advocate will make frequent home visits to work with the families
of each male participant.
Peer support group
Q:What would help you stay in school?
A: "Someone to talk to about problems that I can relate to. "(older male)
While the younger males will develop confidence and self - esteem through
one -on -one mentoring relationships, older males will gain support and
motivation through the example and ideas of their peers. An OFF participant
group will encourage camaraderie and shared knowledge between the
adolescent fathers and young adults.
ACES (Adults and Children Empowered By Support), a peer support
group of the JOBS Program, will serve as a model for the OFF Program.
JOBS Participants meet bi- weekly to hear programs about services they
can access and to discuss such concerns around being a parent.
The OFF peer support group will focus on such issues as money
management. Through collaboration with Orange Congregations in Mission,
the Inter -Faith Council, and other County agencies, the OFF Staff will present
sessions on money management for OFF Participants. These sessions will
focus on basic information like checking and savings account, managing bill
payment, credit cards and loans.
Supportive Services
Health/Mental Health
Typically, young males do not utilize health services in the County. This
absence of males is a result of a lack of knowledge and. availability. There is
little or no emphasis placed on preventive health services which can
strengthen the job performance and life style of the male.
