12
to serve as a liaison for the case advocate. The case advocate will develop a
comprehensive individual plan with each male and his family that includes
his educational, health and family needs. Together, they will set mutually
agreed upon goals that will be monitored throughout the school year.
The case advocate for older males will be responsible for job development
and placement information for the participants. The advocate will strengthen
relationships with local businesses, will research the local labor market,
educate employers about the OFF program and list job opportunities for the
participants.
The advocate will work one -on -one with each male to develop and
implement an individual plan. Since participants in the OFF program will
have little or no familiarity with services available to them, the advocate will
help connect them to appropriate county programs. The advocate will work
closely with county agency staff to make their approach and services as
effective as possible for the males involved.
Strategies for Younger Males, ages 9 to 15
Q:What would make it easier for you to come to school?
A: "To have something to go to school for." (younger male)
Our early intervention strategy, for younger males, will focus on a
partnership with Chapel Hill- Carrboro City Schools and Orange County
Schools. There is currently an effort underway in the County to develop a
local program affiliated with the North Carolina Communities in Schools
Program and the strategies in the OFF Program will be compatible with their
approach.
Core Components
Mentoring
Each OFF male will be matched with a volunteer mentor. The OFF Program
will work with existing mentoring programs in Orange County such as
Volunteers for Youth, Big Brothers /Big Sisters and through the Campus Y at
the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. The OFF Project Coordinator
will identify additional mentors as well and will provide training sessions
and coaching for each mentor.
Young males have goals in life. However, sometimes, they just need a little
push to trust their own dreams; they need someone who will give them
attention, direction and support. A mentor will provide companionship, role
modeling and support.
6/19/91 The Orange County OFF Draft TWO Proposal 10
