It was found that 59% did not know what syrup of ipecac
is and 57% did not know where the nearest Poison Control Center is
located (see Attachment 2). A telephone canvas of six day cares cross
sectioning the county (three in Northern and three in Southern Orange
County) indicated that their staff and families have nerd for
increased knowledge about poison prevention. These six day cares have
agreed to participate in staff training and Kit distribution (see
Attachment 4 for letters of support).
The Hillsborough Kiwanis Club has verbalized an awareness of a need,
for parent education regarding poison prevention. The Hillsborough
Kiwanis Club has also indicated their interest in providing financial
and staff support of local parent education programs in poison
prevention as a part of their ongoing campaign called "Young Children
Priority One," (see Attachment 5).
Additional evidence of public interest is shown by a recent local
newspaper report of the proposed "Poison Patrol" program (see
Attachment 6).
The Duke Poison Control Center has offered its support (see Dr.
Osterhout's letter, Attachment 2). The OCHD will purchase telephone
stickers and pamphlets from the Duke Poison Control Center for the Kit
(see Attachment 3).
3
