The nurses will hand out "Poison Prevention
Kits," and emphasis will remain on education.
In addition to distributing Poison Prevention Kits during well child
clinic visits, Orange County Health Department staff will alert
local day care centers and those local physicians serving poor
familie: to the availability of the Kits, and the importance of
preventing poisoning ayriong young children.
Finally, the OCHD will train staff and interested parents at h local
day care centers, and collaborate with the trained staff to distribute
250 Poison Prevention Kits to parents of day care children.
As part of the training, an on —site video player will be used to show
an appropriate video tape for staff and parent education. Another
video tape will also be geared toward the preschool child to increase
awareness of and compliance with, poison.prevention.
The Poison Prevention Kits (in a zip lock bag) will contain a one
ounce bottle of syrup of ipecac, the Duke University Poison Control
Center Pamphlet "Poison at Work!" and two sticky labels to affix to
the phone, bearing the phone number of the Duke Poison Control Center
(See Attachment 3).
