One is designed to reduce the number of children seriously injured
or killed in automobile accidents by distributing toddler car safety seats.
The other is designed to reduce the number of children seriously injured or
killed in accidental poisonings by distributing poison prevention
information and poison prevention kits.
BACKGROUND: In the Orange County Health Department Community Diagnosis, February, 1990,
premature morbidity and mortality due to injuries, including motor vehicle
accidents and childhood injuries, were found to be among the top five
priority community health needs, Thus, the Health Department staff members
received approval from the Board of Health at its meeting on February 28,
1991, to submit proposals in response to the announcement of available funds
from the Injury Prevention Branch in the Department of Environment, Health,
and Natural Resources.
At the Board of Health meeting on May 23, 1991, the notice of Award letters
were reviewed. A project to reduce childhood fatalities and injuries In
automobile accidents through promoting the use of childhood restraints,
"Buckle Up Baby," has been funded in the amount of five thousand, one
hundred and seventeen dollars ($5,117.00) which is 82% of the six thousand,
two hundred and twelve dollars ($6,212.00) requested. A proposal to reduce
fatalities and injuries due to accidental poisoning, "Project Poison
Patrol," was funded at three thousand, eight hundred and sixty -one dollars
($3,861.00) which is 71% of the five thousand, four hundred and sixty -one
dollars ($5,461.00) requested. Although the amounts are less, the Health
Department has been informed that the State would assist in purchasing the
items necessary to complete the project.
The Board of Health moved to recommend that the funds be accepted with
effect from July 1, 1991, and that the funds be included in the Health
Department budget.
These projects are intended to be short term, non - refundable and non -
continuation. No county dollars are required for these projects.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of Commissioners accept the
funds with effect from July 1, 1991, and authorize the Chair- to sign.
