New Rape Corridor Open Space luster Am <br />s <br />• Open space could form an aesthetic link between Durham and Chapel Hill, while <br />allowing the two communities to remain distinct. <br />Advisory Committee Goals <br />Using a, questionnaire developed by staff (Appendix C), the Advisory Committee <br />identified the following five goals: <br />• To preserve and enhance environmental quality; <br />• To provide opportunities for passive recreation; <br />• To preserve natural habitats for their aesthetic values; <br />• To provide for a pleasing urban form by creating a varied environment and a <br />corridor of open space linking Chapel Hill and Durham; and <br />• To provide opportunities for environmental and cultural education. <br />E. Description of the Master Plan <br />The Committee identified five actions necessary to preserve the open space corridor, <br />each of which accomplishes one or more of the goals: <br />1. Preservation of the 100 -year floodplain and steep slopes (i.e., slopes of 20 <br />percent and greater); <br />2. Creation of open space anchors and access areas; <br />3. Establishment of a scenic parkway; <br />4. Protection of wildlife; and <br />S. Development of regional trails for hiking, bicycling and nature walling. <br />The Plan indicates many locations for trails and may refer to trails as nature trails or <br />as bicycle and pedestrian trails. These trails were considered to be desirable to <br />provide access to the experience and observation of nature, to provide for recreational <br />uses such as walldng, fishing, bird - watching, and jogging, as well as for providing <br />for alternative transportation modes such as walking and bicycling in the urban <br />4 <br />20 <br />
