New Rope Corfidor Open Space Master Plan <br />New Hope Corridor Open Space Master Plan <br />I. New Hope Corridor Open Space Master Plan: Narrative <br />A. Introduction and Overview <br />In 1989, the separate governing boards of Chapel Hill, Durham, Durham County, and <br />Orange County adopted a common resolution recognizing the open space value of the <br />New Hope Creek corridor and supporting its preservation. A copy of the resolution <br />is provided as Appendix S. <br />The governing boards established an Advisory Committee and retained Coulter <br />Associates to work with the Committee as a Consultant in preparing recommendations <br />for the corridor. This Master Plan Narrative and the Master Plan Details (Section II) <br />that follows constitute the findings of the Committee and provide the requested <br />recommendations. <br />The recommendations in this report are not simply recapitulations of the <br />pre - resolution studies or of the resolution itself. Rather, they are the result of detailed <br />studies, on -site inspections, map reviews, consultations with area professionals, and <br />committee judgements. In addition, of great importance, they incorporate the <br />knowledge and suggestions of residents of the jurisdictions affected. <br />Defining the Corridor's Geographical Extent <br />The New Hope corridor can be defined in a number of ways. An all encompassing <br />definition could include lands from the western reaches of Orange County east and <br />south to the waters of Jordan Lake. The narrowest definition could limit the corridor <br />to the central portions of New Hope and Mud Creeks, with little regard for <br />tributaries. Rather than defining the corridor to be all encompassing or in a way that <br />is too limited to answer environmental and land use needs, the Committee <br />
