Ra <br />Highlights of the attached report include: <br />- -Hired a county management assistant with youth <br />coordination as a job component. <br />-- Sponsored a 1989 Forum on Poverty in Orange County <br />which increased understanding, fostered dialogue, <br />and developed a plan of action to reduce poverty <br />conditions. <br />- -Hired drop -out prevention /at -risk coordinators in <br />both school systems. <br />-- Instituted Tech Prep programs which strengthen the <br />vocational educational curriculum in both school <br />systems. <br />-- Strengthened parental involvement in the schools <br />through advisory councils and parenting workshops. <br />-- Expanded teen programming by both county and <br />municipal recreation and parks departments. <br />-- Implemented the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills <br />Program, including adolescent females in its <br />targeted approach of providing job skill/ training <br />opportunities. <br />-- Developed inter- agency teen support groups for <br />troubled teens. <br />-- Increased access to many existing services with <br />additional days and expanded hours. <br />Several recommendations address needs which require <br />long -term efforts. The management assistant will <br />continue to use this report as a working document in <br />addressing youth needs. <br />Copies of this report have been sent to key youth <br />services providers. I am planning a meeting following <br />Board review of this report to review progress that has <br />been made and to- discuss the development of <br />coordination mechanisms to promote further comunication <br />and collaboration among youth services providers. <br />Components include the development of a youth services <br />directory and newsletter, a brochure for teens and <br />their families, and workshops. <br />RECOMMENDATION: Accept final report as working document to guide county <br />staff in continuing to coordinate and improve youth <br />services. <br />
