16 <br />8.Develop resources to work with families in serious <br />distress. <br />-Use of volunteers to supplement resources <br />Ongoing United Way has received grant funding to develop a <br />volunteer action center. <br />9.Develop alternative means to provide other sex role <br />modeling in single parent families. <br />Ongoing Orange County has received a planning grant for the <br />Z. smith Reynolds Foundation Opportunities for Families <br />Fund Program (OFF) grant competition. The county's <br />proposal targets poor adolescent males and their families <br />in order to increase the capability of young males to lead <br />self - supporting lives and be actively involved in the <br />family unit. <br />ongoing volunteers for Youth expanded its program, matching adult <br />volunteers who can provide a constructive role model for <br />troubled teens, to Hillsborough in 1990. Five youths have <br />been matched with adult volunteers through the expanded <br />program. <br />10.Reestablish neighborhood connections: <br />-Focus community initiative to respond collectively to <br />family needs <br />ongoing A major focus of the Opportunities for Families Fund <br />proposal is family - centered service delivery that will be <br />delivered whenever possible within the community setting. <br />ongoing Planned Parenthood initiated the Minority Involvement <br />Project in January 1990, targeting several Chapel Hill and <br />Carrboro subsidized housing neighborhoods for programs <br />aimed at improving teen self esteem and knowledge of <br />community resources. 4 -H and the Chapel Hill Department <br />of Housing and Community Development have joined Planned <br />Parenthood in co- sponsoring educational programs in these <br />neighborhoods. <br />11.Incorporate peer groups into pre - existing community <br />resources and services. <br />Page 16 <br />
