6 <br />ongoing Chapel Hill- Carrboro City schools utilize support groups <br />including various combinations of insight groups, <br />concerned persons groups, and recovery groups, depending <br />on the student's grade level. <br />5.Continue alternative programs for at -risk students, <br />substance abuse assessment, and Work for Success groups. <br />ongoing Teachers in both school systems are trained in the Quest <br />Program, which is directed toward building self - esteem and <br />decision making skills within youth. The program also <br />addresses alcohol prevention issues. Alcohol and other <br />drug education continues to be a high priority in the <br />school systems, and both school systems are now utilizing <br />the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program as one <br />component of their approach. <br />ongoing Chapel Hill High School is currently providing the Work <br />for Success program and seeking funding to insure its <br />continuation. <br />6.Strengthen parental involvement in schools by: <br />-- Training teachers to conduct conferences with parents <br />of at -risk students <br />- Adding school social workers for home /school <br />coordination <br />- Educating parents and starting support groups <br />- Creating innovative programs to meet with parents at <br />their job sites (such a program is currently conducted <br />at NC Memorial Hospital) <br />- Involving Dropout Prevention Task Force. <br />ongoing orange County Schools$ Community Schools Program Director <br />has initiated a system -wide Parent Advisory Council to <br />improve outreach and communication with parents. The <br />Council is planning a pilot "Parent University" this <br />spring, offering workshops to improve parenting skills and <br />strengthen parental involvement. <br />Completed orange County Schools' middle school teachers have <br />attended workshops which emphasized conducting conferences <br />with parents of at -risk students. <br />ongoing Both school systems are moving towards site -based <br />management as part of implementing N.C.'s Senate Bill 2, a <br />state initiative emphasizing greater local flexibility and <br />enhanced accountability for public schools. <br />Page 6 <br />
