LINK, JR., COUNTY MANAGER <br />EXTENSION 2300 <br />INTRODUCTION <br />SUMMARY OF DRAFT ORANGE COUNTY TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />CIVIL RIGHTS ORDINANCE Hillsborough - 732 -8181 <br />AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE ORANGE Durham - 688 -7331 <br />COUNTY TO ADOPT A HUMAN /CIVIL Mebane - 227 -2031 <br />RIGHTS ORDINANCE Chapel Hill - 967- 9251/968 -4501 <br />PURPOSE: To obtain public comment on legislation which would <br />authorize orange County to adopt a Human /Civil Rights <br />Ordinance. <br />BACKGROUND: It is proposed by the Orange County Human Relations <br />Commission that Orange County adopt a civil rights <br />ordinance. This recommendation follows a period of <br />study and public hearings conducted by the Human <br />Relations Commission concerning discrimination in <br />Orange County. Before Orange County can adopt a civil <br />rights ordinance it needs authorization to do so from <br />the North Carolina General Assembly. An attachment to <br />this abstract is a document captioned INTRODUCTION <br />which document was prepared by the Human Relations <br />Commission and which document gives further back- <br />ground. Also a part of this abstract is a document <br />captioned SUMMARY OF DRAFT ORANGE COUNTY CIVIL RIGHTS <br />ORDINANCE which document contains, in summary fashion, <br />the ordinance proposed by the Human Relations <br />Commission. <br />it is the practice of Orange County to conduct public <br />hearings on requested local legislation and to advise <br />our local legislative delegation of the public <br />comments made during that public hearing. <br />
