3 <br />RESOLUTION ENDORSING LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS <br />FOR FUNDING REGIONAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION <br />WHEREAS, the 1989 General Assembly enacted General Statute 160, <br />Section 26 which permits certain counties to establish regional public <br />transportation authorities; and, <br />WHEREAS, the Counties of Durham, Orange, and Wake have jointly <br />authorized the establishment of the Research Triangle Regional <br />Transportation Authority on December 1, 1989; and, <br />WHEREAS, the Secretary of State established the Research Triangle <br />Regional Transportation Authority on December 1, 1989; and, <br />WHEREAS, the Research Triangle Regional Public Transportation <br />Authority requires a source of local funds in order to operate the <br />TRI -A -RIDE ridesharing program, establish a regional bus service, and <br />plan for future transit services. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Orange County Commissioners that <br />Orange County supports the authorization by the General Assembly of a <br />regional surtax on rental vehicles for regional public transportation. <br />
