7 <br />I. Transit P o'ects <br />/ <br />Transit projects fall into three categories: capital, planning <br />and operations. These categories are described below and <br />their costs are listed in Tables A and B. <br />A. planning_ The Town proposes using UMTA Section 9 and <br />Section 8 funds for routine transit planning activities <br />as described in the Durham Urban Area's Used Planning <br />Hark Program. <br />B. Capital. There are several capital needs anticipated for <br />funding during FY 91 -92 under the UMTA Section 3 Capital <br />category, listed in Table A- 1. <br />Chapel Hill Transit operates advanced design coaches. All <br />items to be purchased meet the 111/2 of 1 percent" minimum <br />threshold value set for associated capital maintenance <br />items by UMTA in UMTA circular 9030.1A. The following <br />items will be purchased: <br />Item <br />�d M-� <br />RTS engine rebuilds 84,000 <br />Air conditioning rebuilds 10,400 <br />Transmission rebuilds 29.600 <br />TOTAL <br />124,000 <br />A 500 space park /ride facility is proposed to be <br />constructed along the heavily travelled. N.C. 86 north <br />corridor. Bus service will be provided to the Town <br />Center and University areas which are heavily congested <br />and which have limited parking. The projected <br />construction costs are $600,000; $62,500 is requested for <br />engineering and design work. <br />Preliminary site selection studies for a park /ride <br />facility along the N.C. 86 corridor indicate that several <br />locations should be investigated further during the <br />engineering and design phase. The park /ride site will use <br />approximately six acres, with land acquisition cost <br />estimated at $210,000. The engineering and design work <br />will involve specific site selection. The required <br />independent appraisal will be done to verify the land <br />value and submitted to UMTA and NCDOT. <br />The Town proposes purchasing three support vehicles to <br />replace vehicles which will, at the time of their <br />replacement, meet UMTA's requirements for vehicle <br />replacement set forth in UMTA Circular 9030.1A.
