16 <br />14;2... <br />PI-anning St a ort <br />Subject: 1991 -92 Transportation Improvement Program <br />Date: March 18, 1991 <br />The North Carolina Board of Transportation will hold a public <br />hearing on April 17 to gather information on State -wide <br />transportation needs. Information presented at these hearings will <br />be used to update the State's 10 -year Transportation Improvement <br />Program which allocates Federal and State funds for transportation <br />.projects throughout the State. <br />All of the projects listed in the 1991 -92 Highway element are <br />consistent with'the Town's adopted Thoroughfare Plan. The program <br />Of thoroughfare improvements included for <br />the most recent North Carolina TIP, includingoc continued flunding reflects <br />Fordham Blvd. improvements and the purchase and installation of a <br />computerized signal system for the Town. <br />The requests for roadway improvements are grouped by three Federal <br />funding sources and the Transportation System Management (TSM) <br />category. <br />Federal -Aid Primary routes are U.S, designated routes within <br />the Chapel Hill area. <br />Federal-Aid Secondary routes include major State- maintained <br />roads outside of the Town limits. <br />Federal-Aid Urban funds can be used to improve major <br />State - maintained roads within the municipality which are not <br />included on the Primary Federal -Aid system. <br />Transportation Systems Management (TSM <br />smaller in scope and involve limited imp ovem nts that usuall <br />a significant effect on traffic flow and efficiency. <br />The most recent TIP listed South Columbia Street improvements for <br />consideration after 1997. Two other projects, <br />15 -501 South, between Fordham Blvd and the Chatham improvements to County line and <br />N.C.85, from Homestead Road to I -40, were also included in the <br />State TIP for construction funding after 1997. <br />The attached 1991 -92 list of project priorities includes some <br />changes from the priority listing approved b <br />year.
