1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
`
Item No.
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: April 1, 1991
SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF FINAL DESIGN; GOVERNMENT SERVICES CENTER
DEPARTMENT: PURCHASING & CENTRAL SRVS. PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO:XX
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: PAM JONES
EXT 2650
Telephone Number -
Hillsborough - 732 -8181
Chapel Hill -967 -9251
Mebane - 227 -2031
Durham - 688 -7331
PURPOSE: To review and approve the final design for the Government
Services Building, to be built at the corner of Cameron St. and
Margaret Lane, Hillsborough.
BACKGROUND: In early, 1990 the Board of Commissioners appointed a
Government Services Center Planning Committee which is comprised of Dr.
Stephen Halkiotis, Vice - chair, County Commissioners; Bob Rose, Town of
Hillsborough Commissioner; Hunt McKinnon, then Chair to the
Hillsborough Historic District Commission; Miss Betty June Hayes,
Register of Deeds; John Link, Jr., County Manager; Paul Thames, County
Engineer; and Pam Jones, Purchasing & Central Services Director. This
group has monitored the planning process and provided input to the
Architects both individually and collectively.
The Architects met with the Hillsborough Historic District Commission
in December, 1990 for a courtesy review of the building design. While
the overall comments were favorable the Commission did express some
reservations about the uninterrupted mall line on the Cameron Street
elevation. The uninterrupted wall line on Cameron Street was
redesigned by the Architects and resubmitted on March 20, 1991, but
approval was postponed for two weeks.
In December, 1990, the County placed drawings of two possible designs
in the Library, the Court Street Annex and the Tax and Records Building
to solicit Public comments. There were only two written comments
submitted.
